Cupcake Maker Shows Trend Not Yet Over

Gigi’s Cupcakes rejects the notion that the end of the cupcake era is near, as Crumbs Bake Shop’s bankruptcy prompted news outlets to proclaim the death of the trend. Six years after Gigi’s debut in Nashville, Tenn., business has expanded to 19 states. The company just opened its 93rd store in Westfield, Ind., last weekend and plans to open in five more cities this year. Part of Gigi’s success is having the franchisees remain independent local owners, who bake the products daily in each store and understand their customer base to tailor offerings in the area.
